Pablo Picasso This is our artist Picasso. What do you think of him? Does he look friendly? Silly? Happy? Would you want to spend time with him? What kind of art do you think he made?

PABLO PICASSO, 1881-1973 He was born in Spain with a very long name: Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de Los Remedies Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Y Ruiz Picasso. PABLO PICASSO is considered by many to be the greatest artists of the 20th century. Picasso was born in 1881 in the costal town of Malaga, Spain. It is said that he could draw before he could speak.

Picasso had many talents EYES that saw everything A Heart That loved all of life and nature. Hands that could create great works of art.

These are both self portraits of Picasso These are both self portraits of Picasso. This self-portrait on the right was painted in 1901 when Picasso was only 20 years old. How do you imagine he's feeling? If you said sad you're right. Actually his best friend has died and Picasso was terribly sad. Because he used mostly blue and painted sad subjects this time in PICASSO'S is known as his Blue Period. It was a very sad time for Picasso.

The Old Guitarist Here is another painting from his Blue Period. What kind of music might this man be making? Notice how his head is down. He almost looks broken. The Old Guitarist

The Family of Saltimbanques Picasso began to feel better and it showed in has paintings. Rose Period- (1904-1906) What color has he used the most? He began to use more rosy (pink) colors. This painting is the last of Picasso's Rose Period. It is called The Saltimbanques (men, women, girls, and, boys who filled many jobs in the circus.) National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. ' Picasso loved to go to the circus. This is a family of circus performers. Picasso was fascinated with the acrobats, clowns and harlequins ( a character usually in a diamond patterned costume who doesn't speak). In this painting Picasso paints the scene after the show. Everyone looks tired. The woman in the hat doesn't seem to belong. Picasso has painted himself as the harlequin. The Family of Saltimbanques

Picasso began to paint in a new style. This new style bothered people Picasso began to paint in a new style. This new style bothered people. It wasn't what they were used to. How would you describe the difference?

CUBISM. The Three Musicians Picasso helped create a new style of painting called CUBISM. This style became known as Cubism- an innovative art movement. In Cubism artists began to look at subjects in new ways. They would break up the subject into many different shapes and repaint it from different angles. Cubism started in 1908 and lasted through the 1920's. This painting is called “The Three Musicians”. It's like his picture has broken and been put back together with some new parts. Picasso challenges us to find the musicians. Can you find the 3 musicians? What instruments? Can you find the Harlequin? Picasso said "I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them." The Three Musicians

Guernica (1937) Picasso created this painting as a reaction to the civil war in his home country of Spain. It is one of his most famous. Guernica is a small town in Spain which was bombed, killing many innocent people. Picasso was very angry and used this painting to show the world how painful war is. The painting is entirely black, white , and gray, much like a newspaper photo. It is huge. 12 ft high and 25 feet wide. There is one color you might expect to see in a painting depicting war that's missing. It hangs at the Prado, a museum in Madrid, Spain. Guernica, 1937

This woman was actually very beautiful This woman was actually very beautiful. But Picasso knew that on the inside she was very unhappy. She looks as if she has received some terrible news and is literally falling apart. Tate Gallery, London Weeping Woman 1937

This piece was created for a peace demonstration held in Sweden in 1958. Flours et Mains

His originality. The thing that made Picasso such a great artist was While Picasso chose many different subjects and styles, people who knew him believed that all were biographical. Inspiration came from events in his personal life- from friends, family, as well as larger events such as war. He had the imagination to try new and different things through his entire life. He created over 50,000 works of art.
