Vocabulary Due 1/29/18 0r 1/30/18 –Define, use the word in a Scientific Sentence, draw a picture & color. Genes- Traits- Cells- DNA- Chromosomes- Heredity

Genetics 1/18/2018 Pg. 4

Genetics Genetics-the scientific study of heredity Gregor Mendel- He studied Pea plants to find out why they had different traits. Purebred- offspring of many generations that show the same form or trait.

Inherited vs. Acquired Inherited traits must come from a parent or other ancestor. ... Inherited traits include things such as hair color, eye color, muscle structure, bone structure, and even features like the shape of a nose. Acquired traits- include things such as calluses on fingers, larger muscle size from exercise or from avoiding predators. Behaviors that help an organism survive would also be considered acquired characteristics most of the time

Earlobes Detached Attached

Tongue

Dimples

Handedness Still debate whether left handedness is a recessive trait. 10% people left handed, 20% ambidextrous, 70% right handed.

Freckles

Naturally Curly Hair

Cleft chin

Cross thumbs

See the colors red and green

Hairline peaked straight

F1 and F2 P= parental generation F1= filial (daughter) generation F2= second “daughter” generation

Punnett Squares Dominant allele-the one trait that always shows up in organisms when the allele is present (W). Recessive allele-is the hidden trait when ever the dominant allele is present (w).

Ticket out The passage of traits from one generation to another is called? What are the two kinds of alleles?
