INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS Ms. Wassum. Traits Traits are the different forms of a characteristic that you may exhibit Ex: Blue or Brown Eyes Traits are.
What is the difference?. Vocabulary  Heredity – passing of traits from parent to offspring  Traits – the physical, social, and emotional qualities of.
Chromosomes are made of DNA.
MENDEL’S GENETICS CH. 5-1 How Traits Are Inherited 1.Sex cells with a haploid number of chromosomes are united during fertilization to form a zygote.
GENETICS….. FINALLY!.  We all have different traits/characteristics  Traits – eye color, hair color and texture, height, etc.

Heredity  The study of the passing on of traits from parents to kids.  Learn how and why physical and behavioral characteristics are passed on to from.
Genetics.  Mendel  Studied pea plants.  Traits: something passed from parent to child.

Genetics Study of heredity Heredity is the study of how offspring get their traits from their parents. Traits are physical characteristics: Height, hair.
Why are all first generation flowers gray?
Vocab Gene- Units of heredity; segments of DNA on chromosomes
Gene Every human has a gene for eye color. Gene: A piece of DNA that codes for a protein.
Intro to Genetics What is an allele? –one of the alternative forms of a gene that governs a characteristic, such as hair color.
Genes Observable traits are the result of genes. – Genes are found on the chromosomes in our cells – Each observable trait is determined by two genes,
May 4, What is an allele?. Genotype: genetics of trait (what alleles?) Homozygous: two copies of the same allele –Homozygous dominant (BB) –Homozygous.
Genes and Alleles. Genes Our DNA contains thousands of genes A gene contains all the information and instructions for a particular trait (ex. hair colour,

Intro to Genetics

Terms to know before we start Gene – A section of DNA that codes for a protein that determines a trait (physical characteristic)

Allele vs. Trait Allele – alternate forms of a gene Ex. Trait – Eye color Alleles – Blue, green, brown

You try it!!!!! This section of the chromosome codes for hair color. What is the trait coded for by this gene? What are the alleles for the gene?

Alleles can be dominant or recessive Dominant – allele that is expressed when present shown with _______________ letter EX: B ~ allele for brown eyes Recessive – allele that is hidden when dominant allele is present shown with ________________ case letter EX: b ~ allele for blue eyes

Homozygous vs. Heterozygous Homozygous – two same alleles; purebred EX. BB or bb Heterozygous – two different alleles; hybrid or carrier EX. Bb

Which chromosome set is heterozygous?

Genotype vs. Phenotype Genotype: the two alleles an organism has for a trait Phenotype: the physical appearance of the organism

Talk to a Partner: Determine the genotype and phenotype of each flower
