Manage a Patient Through Recovery Following General Anesthesia 081-833-4551 NONE INSTRUCTOR SFC HILL

OBJECTIVE As a Special Forces Medic given a patient requiring recovery from general anesthesia in a fixed or temporary facility, recover the patient to consciousness orientated X3 in accordance with JSOMTC student manual of anesthesia. Have a student read this slide out loud to the rest of the class.

REASON As a Special Forces Medic you must be prepared to recover the anesthetize patient from general anesthesia. Have a student read this slide out loud to the rest of the class.

PROCEDURES Transportation to recovery room Arrival into recovery room Management of postanesthetic problems Postoperative Summery Discharge Have a student read this slide out loud to the rest of the class.

Transportation to Recovery A B C’s Monitor Treatments Transportation should be rapid. If life threatening problems should develop during transport, return to the OR ASAP.

Transportation to Recovery Airway maintenance Ventilation Cardiovascular function Monitor Treatments Be prepared to manage airway emergencies in route.

Arrival into Recovery Room Identify the patient Summarize pt’s HX and nature of operation Describe anesthetic agents used and input/output during operation Leave instructions for pt management Have a student read this slide out loud to the rest of the class.

Management of Postanesthetic Problems Airway Obstruction Hypotension Hypertension Somnolence Delirium Shivering Nausea and Vomiting These are the postanesthetic challenge.

Management of Postanesthetic Problems Hypotension Treat underlying cause Consider: Dopamine, Dobutamine, Norepinephrine, and Epinephrine Pharmaceutical intervention only after treating underlying causes.

Management of Postanesthetic Problems Hypertension Lasix Morphine O2 Closely monitor input and output.

Management of Postanesthetic Problems Nausea and Vomiting Compazine Meclazine Promethazine Control nausea and vomiting, this can be a threat to the patients airway control.
