Early Life Born in Genoa (modern Italy) to an ordinary family, father was a weaver City is on the ocean, grew up and took to the sea Had unusual ability to navigate

Pirate attack At age 25 a ship he was on was attacked by pirates, ship was burned Floated six miles to Portugal Was amazed by Portugal, probably greatest sailor of the period.

The Plan Worked in many voyages Proposed a new way to go to Asia for trade, promised riches Few were interested Pitched idea to kings and queens everywhere King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain (Portugal’s Rival) agree Gave him three ships: Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria

The Trip Takes two months Crew plans to kill him Luckily sees signs of land Believes he is in India (East Indies) Refers to people he meets as “Indios” which will later evolve to Indian Finds little of the wealth he promised

Fourth Voyage Columbus returned to Spain, cleared but stripped of a lot of his titles and money Was allowed to return on a fourth voyage Made it to Panama Crashed in Jamaica Stranded for a year Nearly killed by his own people and by Indian Had to negotiate for food, blocked out the moon Eventually returned to Spain, broke, poor health

Third Voyage Actually makes it to South America Returns to the colony and it is barely running Revolts have broken out Columbus executed many of the Spaniards Investigator arrived, accused Columbus of mismanagement and arrested him
