Mental Health First Aid is the initial help offered to a person developing a mental health or substance use problem, or experiencing a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis resolves.

Why Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education? 40% of young adults 18-24 are enrolled in 2 or 4 year educational institutions. 75% of mental disorders develop before age 25. Early identification and treatment can lessen the impact of the mental illness. Only 18.5% of college students ages 18-24 receive services for any mental health disorder. 10-20% of female college students and 4-10% of male college students meet the criteria for various eating disorders.
