Cambourne to Cambridge Better Bus Journeys East of M11 Workshop Summary 13 November 2018

East of M11 Workshop – 22 August 2017 The workshop discussed the on-road options, 1 and 6 and the off road option 3a with respect to a series of Transport and Environmental factors. These factors were as follows: Transport Factors: Journey Times Catchment Area Connectivity Conflict with other modes Constructability Safety Flexibility Environmental Factors: Planning Ecology Flood Risk Historic Environment Landscape Visual Noise Air Quality 13 November 2018

East of M11 Workshop – Summary of Initial thoughts People: Where are people travelling to? Safety for walking and cycling? Impact: Iconic green space On conservation zones Impact on communities Infrastructure: Priority bus lanes would improve speed and reliability? Grange road capacity? Buses and cyclists? Option 6 needs more analysis? Scheme not joined up? Alternatives: Light Rail/underground Girton interchange Connectivity: NW Cambridge, Western Orbital, Cambridge North Station. 13 November 2018

East of M11 Workshop – Summary of Option 1 & 6 Transport: Bus congestion in city centre; Tidal flow may take time to get used to; Conflict with driveways; Are bus schemes redundant if light rail is built? Priority traffic lights for buses at key junctions? Less costly than off-road Possibility of joining option 1 and 6? Environmental: Electric buses – less impact on air and noise; Preserves green belt; Ecological and heritage impacts are less; Pollution levels of additional buses; Impact on conservation area justified for time savings? West Fields would serve as reservoir of green space for University and historic Cambridge 13 November 2018

East of M11 Workshop – Summary of Option 3a Transport: Impacts on Grange Road; Adams Road is the main cycleway – conflict with cyclists; Herschel Road – too narrow; Cranmer Road – too narrow/residential; Rifle Range – too narrow/slow due to turns out and in. Environmental: Impact on ‘fingers’ entering city; ‘Sacrifices’ green belt; Busway would open up West Fields for development; Increase in flood risk due to ‘concreting’ West Fields; Noise/pollution from buses; Avoid routes that cross fields. 13 November 2018

East of M11 Workshop – Unanswered questions What would bus priority in Option 6 look like? Where is traffic from Cambourne going? 13 November 2018
