UPSIDE DOWN UP4 INGLE FARM CHILDREN’S CENTRE Completed 2013 The challenge was to create a new Children’s Centre in a former secondary school technology studies building. A collaborative approach between architect and educator was adopted to develop the brief and the subsequent design which was based on current research about educational architecture and early childhood pedagogy. Principles from the Reggio Emilia approach of viewing children as protagonists of their own growth and development were a key influence on the design. The Centre provides occasional care programs for 2-4 year olds, full day kindergarten sessions for 4 year olds, health service programs, parenting support, family activities and support for aboriginal children and those with special needs. It also contains flexible community rooms available to the wider community for child-related activities. It is a true multi-function community centre for families and their young children. The existing structure was utilized, which while being a large ‘barn-like’ building had significant roof south-lights which were utilized to bring natural light into all areas. Some external walls were removed to create a large covered outdoor space which provides visual and physical links between indoor and outdoor spaces. The natural slope of the site provided opportunities to create dynamic outdoor play and learning spaces, and the landscaping incorporates colour, aroma, texture, level change and water management, encouraging imaginative interaction with nature and sensual stimulation. The visit explores the process undertaken to turn the industrial building into a series of spaces which support education and care programs for children from 2-5 years of age.
