Understanding Provider Role in Treating Depression Diagnostic Assessment Clinical Interview Standardized Screening measures or assessments (e.g. PHQ-9, SCL-90, Million, MMPI, etc.) Risk Assessment Can be formal or informal Psychoeducation following diagnosis Developing Treatment Plan Includes Informed Consent Providing Referrals Includes sharing rational with client Ensuring “buy in”

Considerations when Interacting with Clients BIGGEST FACTOR: INSTALLATION OF HOPE Assessment validity Remember the cognitive impacts of depression Comprehension and engagement in treatment planning Ability to follow through with referrals Amotivation and anhedonia and key depression symptoms Treatment timeline within limitations of center’s policies Treatment resistant depression DOES exist!
