The SMILE Program is a a partnership between Oregon State University and school districts across Oregon, including ours.

What is SMILE? Science and Math Investigative Learning Experience (SMILE) An after-school science and math club for students in grades 4-12 An enrichment program for students from groups historically underrepresented in math, science, and engineering. A fun and supportive place for students to get encouragement to stay in school and attend college. The SMILE Program is an after-school science, math, and engineering enrichment club lead by teachers in each SMILE community. SMILE works with students from backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in careers in science, math, engineering, teaching, and the health professions. Along with providing fun hands-on science and math activities, SMILE also sends positive messages about staying in school and going to college. In SMILE clubs students do fun activities, go on field trips, and learn about career opportunities. Mission: to increase underrepresented students’ success in STEM degree programs and careers, and to deliver high-quality teacher professional development.

Where is SMILE? 18 communities and 39 clubs There are currently 18 communities that have SMILE in at least one of their schools. In most communities, SMILE is in the elementary, middle, and high schools so that student can stay in SMILE for as many as 9 years, and some students do! 18 communities and 39 clubs

Who are SMILE students? 707 students (HS 202, MS 322, ES 183) 44% 11% 10% 32% 44% 3% SMILE students come from many different backgrounds. 44% of SMILE students are hispanic, 32% are white from low income or first generation to college families, 11% multiracial, and 10% Native American/Alaska native. SMILE Student Impact Increased High School graduation 100% of SMILE seniors graduated in 2016 Increased college-going rates: The longer a student is in SMILE the more likely they will go to college We are proud of the fact that students involved in The SMILE Program graduate from high school at a higher rate than the general Oregon population. Our data tells us that the longer a student is in SMILE the more likely they will go to college.

Students are encouraged to stay in SMILE as long as possible so that they can receive the most support in pursuing their dreams. In addition to going to SMILE club meetings, SMILE students attend a college-connection event at or near Oregon State University each year. These help students connect with college students and learn more about what it is like to be on a college campus. SMILE Clubs Pipeline from 4th- 12th grades 39 clubs, 18 communities, 707 students in 2016

College Connection Events High School and middle school students come to Western Oregon and Oregon State Universities for the SMILE High School Challenge. Throughout the two days students become a part of a team, and their team must propose a solution to a real life scenario. In 2016 we had 522 students visit OSU for STEM challenge capstone. Elementary students do an overnight event and this years will be at the Oregon Zoo! They then visit PCC and connect with staff and students.

Bridge-to-College For SMILE students transitioning to OSU The Bridge-to-College program is for students who have participated in SMILE and students from similar demographics and are going to be attending Oregon State University. During this two-week summer program, students live on the OSU campus, take part in a research project that builds skills they will need in their first term of college, and participate in fun activities that help them get to know campus.
