GENRE ASSESSMENT How are men & women represented in each poster? Body language & facial expression Clothes & props Position in poster Apply the Male Gaze Theory Who are the primary & secondary audiences for each film? What parts of the posters specifically attract the different audiences? Apply the Uses & Gratifications Theory Genre codes & conventions Plot Locations Characters Apply Propp’s Character Theory For each poster, choose two elements that show the genre, and write a DCSE paragraph for each.

Action-Adventure DCSE Paragraph In the Journey 2 The Mysterious Island poster poster, a male character is seen to be running away from a giant lizard. The male character’s body language and facial expression connote urgency and fear, while the giant lizard connotes imminent danger. The chase signifies the action-adventure genre, as the male character, the hero of the story (according to Propp’s Chatacter Theory), runs away from an opposing force, providing an obstacle in his journey. In addition for a chase being a convention of action-adventure films, the lizard and the setting signify an exotic location, away from modern civilisation, which further represents the genre. As a result, the primary audience of action-adventure films would be further attracted to see the film, as it promises excitement and movement, as well as a strong male character audience members could identify with.
