Background Unknown & undiscussed term 2020: 30.750 migrant elderly with dementia in the Netherlands Unknown & undiscussed term Immigrants unknown with care facilities Caregivers are overburdened 99% immigrants with dementia live at home > 82% of the caregivers is heavily overburdened

Immigrants don’t visit the existing Alzheimer Cafés: Language barrier Culture specific needs (e.g. time to pray) Core objectives of Alzheimer Tearoom The Alzheimer Tearoom aims to: Provide information on dementia Open discussion, why is that important Stimulate emancipation, especially for female caregivers 4. Prevention from social isolation

Methods (1) origin of tearoom Project group & expert meeting Street dialogues with target groups ‘Weten over Vergeten’ Two test meetings The Alzheimer Tearoom... a unique intervention in reaching Turkish and Moroccan caregivers

The Alzheimer Tearoom 6-8 times a year Same structure, different theme Different approach

Results (1) October 2010: First Alzheimer Tearoom Strong need for information & fellow-peer contact Participants were actively involved Success thanks to: Unique culture-specific elements Strong cooperation with local care and immigrant organizations

Conclusion The Dutch Alzheimer Tearoom is very successful Approachable and unique concept First step of improving multicultural dementia care
