Chemistry in Our Lives Chemistry: the study of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter Matter: that which occupies space and can be perceived by our senses

Almost 98% of the mass of the human body is made up of six elements: oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, phosphorus, and calcium. Only about 0.85% is composed of another five elements: sulfur, potassium, chlorine, sodium, and magnesium. All are necessary for life. The remaining elements are trace elements, of which more than a dozen are thought to be necessary for life.

Research is used to gather the data needed to set up your experiments Hypothesis The hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. It is an attempt to answer your question with an explanation that can be tested. If_______[I do this]______________, then ______[this will happen]__________________. a. The hypothesis must be stated in a way that can be tested by experiments Experiments a. Experiments test the validity of the hypothesis. Often many experiments are performed. If the results of experiments provide different results than predicted by the hypothesis, a new or modified hypothesis is proposed and a new group of experiments are performed. Conclusion Theory

Think Like A Scientist Hypothesis: a tentative explanation of some regularity of nature Law: a concise statement of mathematical equation about a fundamental relationship or regularity of nature Scientific laws summarize and explain a large collection of facts determined by experiment Conservation of mass, Conservation of energy Gravity Ideal Gas Law Theory: a tested explanation of basic natural phenomena Different than the common use of theory, where it means a speculative guess A scientific theory has withstood many tests but cannot be proven absolutely, and may be changed if new evidence is found Conservation of mass was the first law of this type to be understood

Science is about observing our environment and asking questions.
