So… What Is A DBQ? Document-Based Questions You will read and analyze historical records, gather information from many documents, and fill in short response questions. You will then write an essay by using information from the documents by citing them. The essay you will be writing about is entitled: Why Did Islam Spread So Quickly? DBQs will help you compare and contrast issues from different views, evaluate the strength of particular arguments, provide high-level thinking opportunities, and develop life skills.

Struggle Time How can knowing the background of Islam help me explain why Islam spread so quickly?

Work Session Expectations You are to work on this assignment on your own, so there is no talking above a whisper. If you need to get up or have a question, raise your hand. You are to work hard and stay focused on the assignment the entire time since you cannot take the work home. Anybody not following the expectations will have card marked and 3 strike system in affect. Reminder: Everything in your DBQ folder is put together for a test/project grade of 40% of your grade.

Work Session 1.) Read and underline important information in the background essay on your own. In your notebook, 2.) Answer the 6 questions in complete sentences 3.) Define the following terms in context: Allah, Pagan, Ka’ba, Islam, Qur’an, and Ramadan and 4.) Create a timeline about the important/major events in Islam.

Closing 1.) Present 3 key ideas you think everyone should have learned from the Background Essay about the Spread of Islam. 2.) State the standard and how what you have learned today better helps you understand the diverse cultures of the people who live in the Middle East.
