High Aspirations @ Parkside School GCSEs can determine what you study at A-level GCSEs can determine what sixth form you go to Universities look at your GCSE grades – they help build a profile of yr ltd learning to date Some apprenticeships require you to have certain grades at GCSE The Education and Skills Funding Agency has confirmed that students with a grade D or 3 in English or maths will have to retake the qualification, and will not be able to take functional skills instead You can leave school on the last Friday in June if you’ll be 16 by the end of the summer holidays. You must then do one of the following until you’re 18: stay in full-time education, for example at a college start an apprenticeship or traineeship spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training Scotland

High Aspirations @ Parkside School GCSEs at Parkside School GCSE are the first public examinations your child will take Students will no longer be able to rely upon coursework to support their final grade in a return to O-level style examinations.   In the summer of 2018, students will take all of their exams at the end of the year and will be required to learn a much wider and more demanding syllabus. High Aspirations @ Parkside School

High Aspirations @ Parkside School There used to be either grades (A*-G). Now there are 9 numerical grades with grade 9 being the highest.

High Aspirations @ Parkside School Unless…they choose vocational subjects BTECs / OCR Cambridge Nationals These qualifications offer a more practical approach than more traditional courses. Assessment is based upon continual assessment and the completion of portfolios of work. There is usually one examined Unit which is externally assessed coursework They are equivalent to 1 GCSE 9 – 1 grade Subjects include:- Business / Health and Social / Dance / Sport / ICT / Engineering / Construction / Hospitality and Catering / Travel & Tourism High Aspirations @ Parkside School

High Aspirations @ Parkside School At Parkside :- All students will follow a core curriculum taking GCSEs in: English Language English Literature Mathematics Science (2 or 3) leading to 5 / 6 GCSEs. Students must continue to study Core PE as part of promoting an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as GCSE Religious Studies or BTEC Travel and Tourism High Aspirations @ Parkside School

High Aspirations @ Parkside School In addition…. Students will make 3 options choices which will be in option blocks. We want students to choose courses which will extend their knowledge and skills, courses they will find interesting and challenging whilst offering them real opportunities for success. Their choices should help them meet their career needs and aspirations, and support their progression into Post-16 at Parkside, onto College or into Modern Apprenticeships or training High Aspirations @ Parkside School

High Aspirations @ Parkside School Options GCSE Art Business Computer Science Photography Psychology Product Design Drama Spanish French Geography History Geography Vocational (BTEC / OCR) Business & Enterprise Sport IT User Systems and Applications Health & Social Care Hospitality and catering IT User Systems and Applications Off site provision - Keighley College Construction Engineering High Aspirations @ Parkside School

High Aspirations @ Parkside School How to make smart GCSE choices Choose your optional subjects because you think you’ll be good at them, and that they will interest you If you’re not sure what you might want to study at university / college, ensure you’ve got a good mix of GCSE subjects Do not choose subjects because you want to be with a best friend or an inspirational teacher – your friendship may not last and the inspirational teacher may leave! If you’re already thinking about a particular type of course, take a look at the entry requirements for specific courses at different unis / colleges / careers and work back from there High Aspirations @ Parkside School For many students they have no idea what careers / job they will end iup in . However if they are definite and want something specific like medicine or enginieering they need to think about carefully about subject choices to open doors. If you want to be a nurse they are likely to ask for biology in addition to maths / eng plus 3 A levels

(McKinsey & Company ) High Aspirations @ Parkside School Mobile technology has become an additional family member – it goes on holiday , out for family meals, out for family walks. It is an extension of the arm!

High Aspirations @ Parkside School Jobs are being done on the move, at any time of day, in almost any location. The global labour market in 2030 is likely to be highly competitive. New attitudes and behaviours will be needed by individuals and businesses founded on flexibility, resilience, collaboration, entrepreneurism and creativity.
