Understanding Cancer and Related Topics
What is cancer? Mitosis- normal cell division Cancer- uncontrolled cell division (carcinoma) –Develops into a tumor Benign- does not spread –(Not Cancerous)
Oncology (onc- = tumor). Oncology (onco- = mass) -plasia = new development -trophy = growth –Changes in Growth sizeChanges in size of individual cell.

Regulating the Cell Cycle the cell cycle has a built-in genetic signals to tell cells when to start and stop dividing –proto-onco genes – genes that encourage.

Staging Cancer

TNM Solid Tumors T- size of tumor: (0-4) the larger, the higher N- lymph nodes nearby: (0-3) the more affected, the higher M- extent of metastasis: 0-not metastasized 1- metastasized

Stage 0 Carcinoma in situ group of abnormal cells debate as to whether it is cancer or not depends on location

Stage I Small tumor Has not spread to lymph nodes or other parts Has not grown deeply into tissues

Stage II Tumor is larger in size Tumor has spread to nearby lymph nodes Tumor has grown deeper into tissues NO METASTASIS to other organs

Stage III Tumor larger in size Tumor has spread to lymph nodes above and below diaphragm Tumor has spread deeper into tissue NO METASTASIS to other organs

Stage IV Tumor larger in size Tumor has spread to lymph nodes Tumor has spread deeper into tissue Metastasis

Treatment Plans Stage 0 and 1-surgery Stage II, III, IV-chemo, radiation, surgery

Gleason Scale Some scales consider growth patterns and differentiation Gleason Scale-prostate cancer considers how much the cells look like one another/ normal cells Higher the score, the worse the prognosis
