The role of the Pope The Pope was Head of the Roman Catholic Church. Key responsibilities of appointing senior clerics. The monarch of England did have a say, especially as the Pope was living a distance away.

Key functions of the Church Performed acts of worship. Key source of charity and care. Preached good works would benefit all. Preached the existence of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory where what you did in this life decided your fate in the next. Celebrated religious holidays. The main source of education.

Growing anticlericalism Growth of Humanist ideas. Growing unease of Church corruption. Growing unease towards the benefit of the clergy. Impact of the Hunne Affair. Ideas of Martin Luther.

Church is still popular Church was still left money and land – making it the largest landowner in the country. Church festivals were still very popular with the people. The Church remained a central part of people’s lives, particularly those places further away from London.
