The Worship of God There are many examples throughout God’s Word of people worshiping Him on their own terms, thus being rejected (Gen. 4:1-5; Heb. 11:4; Rom. 10:17). One of the principles we glean involves the import of worshiping God His way (We do not want to offer up vain worship). Let’s observe the acts of worship for which the NT church engaged within the first century. We will stress the need for seeking to worship God the same way they did, as they were under the guidance of the apostles.

Authorized New Testament Worship ~ Acts 2:42

Authorized NT Worship One of the things we do in the church today involves teaching (Acts 2:40-45; Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 20:7; 1Tim. 4:11-16) Another act of worship involves prayer (Acts 2:42, 47; 4:24, 31; 12:5) The Church & the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:23-26; Acts 2:42, 20:7; Cf. Exod. 20:8) Another thing the church did upon the first day of the week was to give (1 Cor. 16:1-2; 2 Cor. 9:6-7) The Church and Music in Worship (1 Cor. 14:15; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Two kinds of Authority Generic Authority… Plane Matthew 28:19 “Go” Train Walk Hebrews 10:25 “Assemble” House Building Hall

Two kinds of Authority Specific Authority… Gopher Genesis 6:14 “build ark” Oak Pine Romans 15:9 Ephesians 5:19 “sing” Sing Colossians 3:16 Play

Quotes from some prominent men to consider… “I do not object to mechanical instruments of music, as long as they are neither seen nor heard.” John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, Cited by Methodist commentator Adam Clarke; Clarke’s Commentary, Vol. 4, p.684 “Musical instruments in celebrating the praises of God would be no more suitable than the burning of incense, the lighting of candles, and a restoration of the other shadows of the law.” John Calvin, founder of the Presbyterian Church, Calvin, Commentary on Psalm 33, see also commentary on 1 Samuel 18:1-9 “The organ in worship is an ensign of Baal.” Martin Luther, founder of Lutheranism, cited in Instrumental Music and New Testament Worship, James D. Bales, p. 130.

A Spiritually Minded Order of Worship By giving heed to doctrine, men and women lend an open ear to the word (Rom. 10:17). With prayer we have the avenue of speaking to God (Jas. 5:16). What an honor it is to approach His throne in prayer! By observing the Lord’s Supper weekly (1 Cor. 11:28-29), we keep His sacrifice fresh in our minds and examine ourselves on a regular basis. By giving of our means, we acknowledge God as the giver of all that is good (Eph. 1:3). We also show our love for the work that is to be done by the church. Within our songs of praise, we are teaching and admonishing one another (Col. 3:16).

Authorized NT Worship Let us give heed to what God’s word has to say about the matter of worship… according to His Word. If our worship is not according to what’s been authorized in God’s Word, then it is WITHOUT LAW (1 Jn. 3:4).

Hebrews 5:8-9 … though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, (NKJV)
