ESP Vocabulary and Texts Class Rules You are absent if you – miss class without a validated reason, – arrive more than 10 minutes late, or – leave more than 10 minutes early. You are given a tardy if you – come to class five (5) minutes late, – use a wireless device such as a cell phone during class unless permitted by instructor, – cannot stay awake in class after repeated reminders by the – instructor, or disrupt the class with behavior that continues to distract other students even after being asked to stop such behavior. Two (2) Tardies counts as one (1) Absence. If you have more than 3 absences, you will not be allowed to take the Final Exam (DUFE Policy).

ESP Vocabulary and Texts More Class Rules Academic Honesty, Cheating, and Plagiarism: • Academic dishonesty defrauds all those who depend upon the integrity of the Institute and the University, its courses, and its degrees and certificates. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. • Plagiarism is the act of turning in someone else’s work as your own, turning in a paper/work from the Internet, or not giving credit for information obtained from source material. Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable. If you plagiarize, you will receive no credit for that assignment. Repeat offenders will be reported to the Program Director.

ESP Vocabulary and Texts More Class Rules Classroom: Native language- This is an intensive English language program— utilize the opportunity to practice only English while in class-- even though all of your fellow classmates can speak your native language. Practicing this policy is a sign of respect for other students’ language goals and a courtesy to your instructor who is committed to your improvement via this method. English-only during class is also an indication that you are committed to your mission of learning to speak English fluently. • Homework- Late or homework not completed will reduce your grade in this ESP class. Homework of low quality will result in a low quality grade.

ESP Vocabulary and Texts Homework Several Types of Homework will be assigned weekly. These include: ♦ Textbooks: Textbook exercises (including listening to the CD); Highlighting all vocabulary from the week’s word list—understanding what it means. ♦ Student Teaching: Students in groups will prepare a Student Teaching Presentation for each week. Each group will present twice. ♦ Quia: Some additional work will take place every week in Quia. This will include preparatory Mock Midterm and Final Exams. Other HW / Participation will comprise 10% of course grade.

ESP Vocabulary and Texts Homework – Student Teaching Directions – Groups will find an article closely related to the Unit to be studied in the following week and send it to Joe digitally at least 24 hours before class. Your group will summarize for the class (written and oral), lead an engaging discussion about a key idea or two in the article, and then quiz students about what was presented in a creative way during a 10-15 minute presentation. Required: Each student in the group must take a part in presenting. ♦ A business / tourism related news article (maximum of 400 – 600 words) ♦ A summary (100 – 125 words) ♦ Lead discussion about the article’s relevance to business/tourism today ♦ Reading Comprehension questions (one way—others possible) ♦ Two Critical Thinking questions (one way—others possible)

ESP Vocabulary and Texts Homework for Week 2 1) Student Book – Unit One: ♦ Have a new book (used Workbook is okay) by next week. If you don’t have a new book by next week, you will be marked Absent. ♦ Go to Quia website and find the Word List Vocabulary and Additional Vocabulary there for Unit 1. Highlight all words in the textbook for Unit 1 and understand how they are used in context. ♦ Complete Exercises: Listening 1 and 2 (pg. 12), Vocabulary 1 & 2 (pg. 13), Business Communication 1—4 (pg. 14), Checklist for Unit 1: Briefly answer the five questions ♦ Groups that were selected to present in Weeks 2 or 3: Search for a relevant article regarding Customers or Companies.
