Social Media and Communications Training

OVERVIEW Introduction Social Media Media Relations Last thoughts for reference

Sharing is caring Change Day Ontario is a provincial (and beyond) movement and we want as many people to participate as possible The more we stay connected and share with one another and share our stories, the more successful Change Day Ontario will be

Two main ways to connect 1 2 Social Media (e.g., Twitter) To connect with one another and to get more of our friends, colleagues, and family involved Media Relations (e.g., print, radio) To connect with our communities and to inspire others to get involved

MEDIA RELATIONS

What is media relations? Media relations is connecting and working with the media to create a story about your organization and/or an issue. How does it work? Create a story for media that tells your point-of-view and is interesting for their readers.

How will media relations help me? Media outreach provides an opportunity to share your story and get people excited about Change Day Ontario! If you have an internal communications or public relations team, work with them on how to share your story. If you don’t have a communications team, we will work with you to get the word out!

How can I use media relations? Media are time-strapped and often working against deadlines. Being prepared is key to getting their attention! RESEARCH MEDIA CREATE THE STORY DEVELOP SUPPORTING RESOURCES Research the appropriate journalist and their channel (i.e., newspapers, radio, online, TV) and determine who would be interested in your story. Determine how you can tell a story that meets your objectives and would be ”newsworthy” for media. What would help you communicate the story? A few examples include a press release, images, a spokesperson, etc.

How can I use media relations? How to create a story that media care about: CREATING THE STORY TIMELY NEWSWORTHY RELEVANT TO TARGET AUDIENCE WHY SHOULD I CARE? CONCISE TAILOR THE STORY

How am I being supported? Media relations is a great tool to help drive awareness and excitement around your program. And, we are here to help! Press release template (is available on the website under Resources) Q&A at the end of this session If you need help prepping your story, feel free to contact us at: info@changedayontario.ca

Tips and Tricks! Media prefer to receive email first. Think about drafting an email pitch and sharing your press release this way. Media are busy so if you don’t hear back, follow-up with a call or another email. Practice your phone pitch! If you do get media on the phone, you only have a few minutes to share your story. Continue reading the journalists’ stories to see how you can change your pitch based on timely news.

How to create a Facebook account WikiHow has a great step-by-step walk through on how to set-up your Facebook account: http://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-a-Facebook-Account

How to create a Twitter account WikiHow also has a great step-by-step walk through on how to create a Twitter account: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Twitter-Account

How to create a Instagram account Finally, WikiHow has an equally great step-by-step walk through on how to create your Instagram account: http://www.wikihow.com/Set-up-Instagram

What are hashtags? Hashtags are any words or phrases that have a “#” in front that allow anyone to search and find all content that contains that hashtag. Our hashtags are: #ChangeDayON, #Differenceisyou Hashtags are generally used the most on Twitter and Instagram When you post, please use our hashtags so we will be able to find what you’ve posted and respond and/or share your content

Hashtags examples

What is tagging? “Tagging” is when you add an “@” symbol in front of a person or organization’s social media alias. This turns that person’s name into a link and also notifies us that there is a post that is related to them. If you would like us to respond to your posts or see it right away, please tag us @ChangeDayON Tagging is used across all channels: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram If you tag us on Twitter and the tag is at the beginning of your tweet, please add a “.” infront of the tag so that your post shows up in public feeds ie: .@ChangeDayON I just made my pledge at changedayontario.ca! Added “.” to the tag
