Hosted Learning Scenario LMS Login - Authentication Session Management Grade Book Record Keeping Entitlement Management Publisher’s Site Student Content Delivery Engines Hosted Learning Activities 19Feb10 This scenario involves two systems, an institutional LMS and a publisher’s website containing hosted learning materials, plus the student’s workstation, possibly just a browser. The session is initiated in the LMS, but the learning activity is delivered by the publisher’s site. The envisioned data exchange specs are underlined in the following: The institution purchases rights to some of the Publisher’s content. There may be time limits, usage limits, concurrent usage limits, and other contractual constraints. Information (metadata) about the purchased catalog and these “entitlements” to the publisher’s materials are downloaded (via an as yet unspecified catalog spec) to the LMS’s Entitlement Management module, along with a publisher’s token that identifies the LMS to the publishers. A student logs into the LMS and selects an activity. She is forwarded to the Publisher’s website, along with the token that reflects the institution’s contract with the publisher. Usage and billing information can be calculated by both systems. Activity Initialization Data is also passed from the LMS’s Session Management module to the Publisher’s website, which in turn launches the selected activity and manages student interaction. Activity initialization data may include data about the student, the students work station, launch options for the activity, and the kind of performance reporting the LMS expects to be returned. When the student leaves the hosted activity an activity report is returned to the LMS (completion, activity duration, …) along with the requested performance information, if any.
