Chapter 4: Economic Growth Rates Beyond Economic Growth: An Introduction to Sustainable Development By Tatyana P. Soubbotina

Overview of Chapter 4: Economic Growth Rates GDP growth v. population growth Is income per capita converging? GDP per capita growth across regions Are some countries converging?

GDP growth and population growth GDP growth is faster in low-income countries(Fg. 4.1) Will low-income countries catch up or “converge”? Population growth is faster in low-income countries (Fig. 4.1) Is GDP growing faster or slower than population? GDP per capita growth is slower in low-income countries (Fig. 4.1) Low-income countries are not converging, and the gap between rich and poor might be widening

GDP per capita growth across regions GDP per capita growth rates vary across regions Fast growth in East Asia but slow growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (Map 4.1 and Fig 4.2) Figure 4.4 shows that the gap between developed and developing countries generally widened 1965-95, EXCEPT for Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong Since 1995 Convergence has continued (has occurred?) in East Asia Dramatic convergence has begun in China and India Sub-Saharan Africa is falling further behind
