Papa Caliente Objective: Students will practice grammar, vocabulary, or cultural points to reinforce their knowledge of the target language. Materials: Music, cups, ball, PowerPoint slides Directions: This activity can be done in a variety of ways. First divide the class up into groups. In my class I had two groups. Have each group have some kind of object that they can pass around with each other (ball, cup, stuffed animal) Start playing the music and one or both of the groups starts passing the object around in class. The students continue to pass the object around until the music stops. I usually allow someone from the other team to stop the music without watching the other team pass the ball around. Once the music stops, the person with the ball has to answer a question. I usually put the question up on the board through PowerPoint. If the person is incorrect, then the other team can steal the answer. Here is the template from the workshop: Other ideas: Verb conjugations, pictures with vocabulary, fill in the blank.

Tortuga (turtle) Objective: Students will practice writing and spelling in the target language. Materials: White board markers and main whiteboard in front of the class. Directions: Divide the class into two or three teams (groups) The teacher will give a sentence or vocabulary word in English. One student from each group will come up and write the word or sentence in the target language. It is a race. So, the student that has the correct answer first wins. If the student is incorrect or doesn’t know the answer, they must pass the marker to the next person in his or her group that is seated at his or her desk. If the next person doesn’t know the answer, he or she must still come up and tap the board and pass it to the next person. Each point is a circle. After each correct answer, the student adds another circle to the Tortuga. The final two points are a tail and an X on the shell until it looks like this on the next slide:

Tortuga

avalancha Objective: Students will practice writing and spelling in the target language. Materials: Main white board and dry erase markers Directions: Divide the class into two teams (groups) The teacher will give a sentence or vocabulary word in English on the board. One student from each group will come up and write the word or sentence in the target language starting at the bottom of the mountain It is a race. So, the team that has completed all of the words on the board wins. If a student is incorrect, the teacher erases all of the words that the team has attempted and they must start over again. If a student skips his or her turn, it is an avalanche as well. I have an example of a template that I use in my classroom on the next slide:

Avalancha You don’t say ____Afterwards___ ________To where?_______ __________The church_________ ___________The movie theater________ ________________The beach_______________

taboo Objective: Students will practice describing vocabulary words in the target language: Materials: Taboo Template with timer, vocabulary words, LCD projector. Directions: Divide students into groups of three Then assign a group (Group 1 or Group 2) to each group One student will face the board while the other two students will face the person describing the words Lower level: Since students are limited in their ability to speak the language, the student describing the word can use the words that appear underneath the word that they are attempting to describe. This will help them to communicate in the target language. Upper level: Students have no clues to help them describe the word without saying it. I have placed a timer on the slides but you can right mouse click on the bar to change the time limit. If you have any questions, I can walk you through it. There is a template in the next page.
