UNIT 6 EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING Definitions Program : The term has been derived from the Latin word “Pro-graphein” means a plan of procedure. The dictionary meaning is –a prospectus— a list of events---a plan of procedure etc.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING The word planning has been derived from the Latin word “Planta” means sole of the foot which provides base for an organizational body to stand on. In general planning means an outline, draft, map, a scheme for making or doing or arranging something. Planning is designing a course of action to achieve ends.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING It refers to the art of designing and implementing a course of action to achieve an effective program. It is an effort to use the available resources and organizational capabilities to achieve the best possible results in extension and educational endeavors. It is the process by which people usually prepare a program with the help of a committee, extension workers and other resource persons.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING It provides answer to what, why, whom, when, who and how of the people. It has also been defined as a process of preparing a systematic line of action for achieving certain overall and specific objectives in relation to needs and available resources. Other terms used for program planning are “programming”, “Program building”, “program development”.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING Extension program Planning Process Extension program It is a statement of situation, priorities, needs, problems, and solutions. It gives answer to why, where, whom, what, when, and how.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING It is a statement that includes : Primary facts that reveal the situation for each major problems that are to be dealt with by the program. Significant problems of needs. Major reasons for solving the problems Statement of long term objectives to be attained.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING A program forms the basis for formulating extension plans. An extension plan is an outline of extension activities so arranged as to enable efficient execution of the program as a whole, or in part.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING A program answers the questions, what will be done and why? A plan of work tells how, when, where and by whom the program shall be carried out. The plan and program of work supplement each other and neither can stand alone.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING Program planning process : It refers to the dynamics of when a series of interrelated elements or actions are undertaken to bring about a desirable outcome or results.

EXTENSION PROGRAM PLANNING According to Baker (1984), the basic elements of the program planning process are : Analyze the situation. Identify needs. State objectives. Inventory resources 5. Select methods, techniques, and aids 6. Implement the program 7. Evaluate the process and the results.
