Water Vapor & Humidity Vocabulary/Notes

1. water vapor water in the form of a gas water vapor is in the air it is invisible, colorless, odorless, & tasteless When a puddle dries out, do you see the water disappear into the air? That’s water vapor.

2. humidity the amount of water vapor in the air How does water get into the air?

3. evaporation changing of a liquid into a gas this process takes lots of energy main energy source is the sun

4. condensation changing of a gas into a liquid condensation is on… shower doors cold drink glasses dew on grass

5. relative humidity comparison between how much water vapor is in the air and how much the air can hold What do you think happens when the air reaches 100% humidity? It rains. ex. As the temperature changes, the amount of moisture in the air also changes. Warmer air has more moisture and there is less water vapor when it is cold. Imagine that Seattle and Boston have the same humidity level of 75%. If Seattle has a temperature of 65°F, while Boston has a temperature of 95°F, the amount of water in the air will be greater in Boston than in Seattle. Even though both cities have the same humidity level, there would be more moisture in the air in Boston.

6. precipitation any form of water particles that falls from the atmosphere and reaches the ground (pg. D46)

7. Reading a thermometer What are the temperatures on these thermometers? Pay attention to how many degrees are between each line. *Give students thermometers to glue on page*

What are the temperatures on these thermometers? 72* F 22* C 100* F 37* C *Give students thermometers to glue on page*
