California Standards Number Sense (NS1.4) - Calculate given percentages of quantities and solve problems involving discounts at sales, interest earned, and tips.

Objective: You will learn how to (YWLHT) solve problems involving percent. 4 4

Vocabulary Regular price – the amount something costs before a discount (Sale Price + Discount = Regular Price) Discount – the amount that is taken off, saved, or that you do not have to pay (Regular Price – Sale Price = Discount) Sale price – the amount something costs after a discount is taken off (Regular Price - Discount = Sale Price )

Example 1: Finding the sale price using proportions. The regular price of a bicycle helmet is $42.99. It is on sale for 20% off. What is the sale price? Step 1: Find the amount of the sale price. Think: 80% of $42.99 is what number? 80 100 = n 42.99 Write a proportion. 80 • 42.99 = 100 • n Set the cross products equal. 3439.2 = 100n 3439.2 100 = 100n 100 Divide each side by 100. 34.392 = n Round to the nearest cent. The amount of the sales price is $34.39.

Example 1: Finding the sale price using decimals. The regular price of a bicycle helmet is $42.99. It is on sale for 20% off. What is the sale price?

Example 2: Finding the discount using proportions The regular price of a bicycle helmet is $42.99. It is on sale for 20% off. What is the discount? Step 1: Find the amount of the discount. Think: 20% of $42.99 is what number? 20 100 = n 42.99 Write a proportion. 20 • 42.99 = 100 • n Set the cross products equal. 859.8 = 100n 859.8 100 = 100n 100 Divide each side by 100. 8.598 = n Round to the nearest cent. The amount of the discount is $8.60.

Example 2: Finding the discount using decimals The regular price of a bicycle helmet is $42.99. It is on sale for 20% off. What is the discount?

Check It Out! Example 3 The regular price of a computer game is $49.88. It is on sale for 15% off. What is the sale price?
