What is Gothic Literature? The denomination “gothic” originated with the elegant architecture created by the Germanic tribes which were also known as the Goths in older literature. Most of the medieval style of architecture was included into this as well seeing as it was already very similar. It is usually considered that the height of the Gothic period was between the years 1764-1840, but it still influences many authors in the present day.

What can be found in a Gothic novel? In a Gothic novel the atmosphere will typically be one of mystery, suspense or fear, this mood is only empowered by the unknown or the unexplained. There is often a powerful omen or foreshadowing of events to come in the novel. In most Gothic novels there is usually a powerful influential male who preys on the young, virginal, innocent or naïve woman. Although in the novel The Picture of Dorian Grey the person we can see being influenced the most would be Dorian Grey.

A Few Examples of Gothic Novelists… Horace Walpole – The Castle of Otranto Edgar Allan Poe – The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death Oscar Wilde – The Picture of Dorian Grey Emily Brontë – Wuthering Heights Robert Louis Stevenson – The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Victor Hugo – The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
