Tuesday April 8th 2014 Welcome! Pick up a review packet from the front counter and make sure you have a highlighter today. Write your name on your packet and look through it to get an idea of what we will be working on this week.
Tuesday April 8th 2014 Rocks, Water and Weather
The Earth is a dynamic planet.
When we look inside our planet…
Crust and mantle, crust and mantle… The earth’s layers are responsible for: Earthquakes Continental Drift (pangea to the 7 continents we have now) AND the aurora borealis!!!
Three main types of rocks Igneous- formed in volcanoes Sedimentary- formed from sand and river debris under pressure Metamorphic- formed from chemical weathering, heat and pressure
Open your packet to page 4: The rock cycle Try and fill in as much of your diagram as possible in the next 3 minutes based on what you remember about the rock cycle.
Do rocks change quickly?
Like rocks, water cycles too! Turn to page 5 in your packet
The water cycle At what point do trees and plants give off water to the surrounding air? Transpiration
The water cycle When water molecules cool down from a gas and become a liquid in clouds we call that __________________________. condensation
The water cycle Rain, snow, sleet, hail and any other falling water is considered _________________. precipitation
Weather is caused by air, water and rocks
Let’s forecast!
Barometric Pressure Refers to air pressure and causes wind and cloud patterns due to high and low pressure systems
Cloud Types
Humidity? Dew point is when water vapor turns to visible moisture Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air
Vocab to Highlight Sedimentation Deposition Precipitation Core Pangaea Water table Erosion Weathering Tectonic activity Geologic time scale Water cycle
Practice Questions 1. During the water cycle the water on earth spends MOST of its time in which two areas? A. Clouds and rain B. Plants and the ocean C. Clouds and the ocean D. Runoff and Plants ANSWER: C
Practice Questions If a high pressure system was forecasted for your region you would expect the weather that day to be: A. clear and sunny B. raining C. cloudy D. thunderstorm ANSWER: A
Practice Questions To change an igneous rock directly into a metamorphic rock what environmental factors must occur? A. volcanic activity B. erosion and weathering C. cooling and melting D. pressure and heat ANSWER: D
Homework Please complete the 6th page in your review packet for homework tonight. This page reviews what we talked about today about the layers of the earth.
Welcome ELT! Grab a piece of paper from the front counter and write a sentence at the top, any sentence that is appropriate.
