Presentation transcript:

Hindbrain -The lower section of the brain involved in many vital functions such as heart rate, respiration, and balance. Medulla- involved in vital functions- heart rate, blood pressure, swallowing & breathing. Pons- located in front of the medulla, involved in regulating body movement, attention, sleep & alertness. Cerebellum- involved in balance & coordination

The Midbrain Located between the hindbrain & forebrain; includes areas involved with vision & hearing. Reticular Activatin System- Important wakefulness & arousal. Alcohol reduces its activity Sudden loud noises stimulate it Damage would cause a Coma

Forebrain Thalamus- Greek for “inner chamber” serves as a relay station for sensory stimulation. Transmits sensory information. Ex. Similar to operator switchboard.

Forebrain Limbic System- Latin for “border” involved in learning & memory, emotion, hunger, sex & aggression Includes Hypothalamus, Hippocampus, & amygdala Hypothalamus- regulates body temperature, the storage of nutrients, motivation & emotion, involved in hunger, thirst, sexual behavior, & aggression.

The Limbic System Hippocampus- (hipp0= horse) Neural center that “camps around” the back of the thalamus and helps process new memories for permanent storage. Amygdala- (Greek for “almond”) Controls many of your emotional responses Ex. Fear & Anger

Cerebral Cortex Cerebral cortex- the outer layer of the brain that form the body’s ultimate control and information-processing center. Divided into right & left hemisphere: Longitudinal fissure- Crevice that divides the cerebral cortex into the hemispheres Corpus Callosum- structure that connects the 2 hemispheres for communication Cerebrum- 70% of brain weight.

Association Areas Shape information into something meaningful. Located in the frontal lobe. Appears to be where we solve problems and make plans & decisions.

Movement & Feeling Motor Cortex- A strip of the brain tissue area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements Somatosensory Cortex- A brain area at the front of the parietal lobes that registers and processes body sensations.

Language Abilities Wernickes Area- (located in temporal lobe) pieces together sounds & sights When this is damaged speech makes no sense Broca’s Area- (located in frontal lobe) controls the areas of the face used for speaking. When this is damaged speech is slurred

Right and Left Brain Each have certain functions The corpus callosum connects these two hemispheres so you can use both sides of your brain!

Which direction is she moving? clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Dancer Girl Clockwise- then you were using more of the right side of your brain Right brain people- more abstract, creative, feelings, imaginative, etc. Counter-Clockwise- you were using more of the left side of your brain Left brain people- more practical, facts rule, realistic, strategic, etc.

Left Brain/Right Brain Tests: How accurate are they? To Score Give yourself one point for each time you answered "A" for questions: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21. Give yourself one point for each time you answered "B" for questions: 4 ,5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18. Add all points. Totals imply: 0-4: strong left brain 5-8: moderate left brain 9-13: middle brain 14-16: moderate right brain 17-21: strong right brain

Right Hemisphere Style Left Hemisphere Style Right Hemisphere Style Rational Responds to verbal instructions Problem solves by logically and sequentially looking at the parts of things Looks at differences Is planned and structured Prefers established, certain information Prefers talking and writing Prefers multiple choice tests Controls feelings Prefers ranked authority structures Intuitive Responds to demonstrated instructions Problem solves with hunches, looking for patterns and configurations Looks at similarities Is fluid and spontaneous Prefers elusive, uncertain information Prefers drawing and manipulating objects Prefers open ended questions Free with feelings Prefers collegial authority structures Sequential Is a splitter: distinction important Is logical, sees cause and effect Simultaneous Is a lumper: connectedness important Sees resemblances

Flashcards on the following: Pons Medulla Cerebellum Thalamus Hypothalamus Hippocampus Amygdala 8. Brocas Area 9. Wiernicks Area 10. Corpus Callosum 11. Cerebral Cortex 12. Longitudinal Fissure 13. 4 lobes (1 card) **After you’re done, draw the brain on your sheet and label the locations on a separate sheet of computer paper, you will be responsible for locating these parts on the test. Both the flashcards and drawing will be turned in with notes the day of the test.
