47th PMP IWG Meeting – Ispra (IT) – 17.05.2018 INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR NON-EXHAUST EMISSION REDUCTION IN SURFACE TRANSPORTATION Theodoros Grigoratos1 1 European Commission, Joint Research Center, Sustainable Transport Unit 47th PMP IWG Meeting – Ispra (IT) – 17.05.2018

i. What is the project about? The European Training Network TRON aims in bringing together eight academic and nine industrial partners from eight countries The goal is to establish a unique research and training framework for 15 doctorate topics and individual projects in the area of technologies for the minimisation of non-exhaust emissions from surface transportation TRON will develop a set of methods, tools, devices and systems required for the measurement, identification, classification and reduction of particle emissions (i) from automotive and train brakes as well as (ii) from tyre-road and wheel-rail interaction

ii. Who is participating to the project? The participants fall under two categories: The Beneficiaries and the Partner Organizations Beneficiaries are mainly universities (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Centrale Lille, Politecnico di Bari, Technische Universität Graz, University of Leeds, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, University of Surrey) but also non-academic (AVL List GmbH, Flertex Sinter, IDIADA, Tenneco) Partner organizations are AUDI AG, KOMPASS GmbH, FATE S.A.I.C.I, Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, Chassis Brake International and the Joint Research Center

iii. What are the main Working Packages (1/2)? WP1 – Administrative, technical, scientific and financial maintenance and coordination of the project WP2 – Management of the activities related to the training and education of the ESRs with the aim of developing cutting-edge technologies and new experimental technique to achieve and assess the reduction of non-exhaust particle emissions WP3 – Definition of new models for the prediction of non-exhaust particle emissions aimed at establishing a new and update repository for emission factors WP4 – Development of test facilities and test procedures for laboratory measurements and real-world trials to characterise the particle emissions from non-exhaust sources

iii. What are the main Working Packages (2/2)? WP5 – Development of new engineering solutions and control systems aimed respectively at abating and controlling the non-exhaust emission from surface transportation systems WP6 – Assessment of the harmful effect of non-exhaust particle emissions on the surrounding environment aimed at setting emission limits for the prospective EU legislations WP7 – Activities aimed at fostering and disseminating the technological solutions and scientific progress achieved during the project implementation.

iv. What is the status regarding the proposal? The proposal was submitted the EC on Wednesday 17th of January 2018 under the call H2020-MSCA- ITN-2018 The consortium is currently expecting for the completion of the evaluation stage If the Project passes the evaluation phase then it is expected to start the work in Autumn If the Project fails to pass the current evaluation then the consortium will submit the proposal for the next round of submissions
