RDA/TDWG Metadata Standards for Attribution of Physical and Digital Collections Stewardship Anne E Thessen, Matt Woodburn, Dimitris Koureas 21 Sept, 2017/Montreal, Canada WWW.RD-ALLIANCE.ORG - @RESDATALL CC BY-SA 4.0 1

Summary of the Problem Problem Statement Curators cannot get credit for curation activities Impact of the unresolved problem Collections are under-curated Object provenance is lost Actions may be unnecessarily repeated

Status of the Deliverable Complete: Develop use cases across domains via WG contribution and community engagement Investigate existing schemas/infrastructure In progress: Evaluate applicability of existing models/KOSs and perform gap analysis Draft attribution metadata standard and schema document Remaining: Schema review with feedback from case studies Final attribution metadata standard and schema document Liaise with stakeholders and community actors to establish adoption plans through piloting actions Initiate process suggesting the schema for ratification as a community standard through TDWG

Initial Adopters Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) Implement a Darwin Core extension for use by biodiversity databases TDWG 2017 meeting in October PROV and VIVO Adding to these ontologies will push our recommendations to all their users CRediT

Expected Impact of the Deliverable A mechanism for: Improved recognition of the immense effort required for maintaining, curating, and sharing collections, which is likely to lead to increased funds for these activities Increased efficiency in knowledge generation from collections through the proper documentation of corrections and analyses performed Increased viability of crowdsourcing as a model for building collaborative research resources Increased relevance of existing e-infrastructure that is being stifled by the expert annotation bottleneck

Expected Impact of the Deliverable Before After Curation history either undocumented or not digital Curators can only do curation tasks in the margin of their time Actions are unnecessarily repeated because an item history is unknown Curation history easily found Curators can get credit for the very important work of maintaining research collections and can make it a priority Curation and analysis tasks are made much more efficient

Feedback Desired from RDA Community Are we missing any overlap or collaboration within RDA? Any disciplinary concerns we are missing?
