I’ll share some helpful and eye opening information about the current driving environment and how changes have impacted our roads in a big way, especially lately. Then we are going to test your multitasking distracted driving skills with an activity. Finally, we are going to brainstorm ways to be a more active driver and make a game plan you can hold yourself accountable for when you get in the driver’s seat. Our goal is to talk about what we can all do to drive with purpose and stay active and aware when we’re behind the wheel

Allstate has a long history of help keep our roads safe, beginning almost 50 years ago by working with the government and automakers on auto passenger safety including seat belts and airbags. About 10 years ago, The Allstate Foundation set a goal to help reduce teen traffic fatalities by 50% by 2015. To do this, the Allstate Foundation advocated for teen safe driving in legislation through the Save 11 initiative, and passed a bill through Congress to reduce teen driving deaths by 2,000 teens each year from 4,000 teens a year. Today, we have had millions of people join the X the TXT movement and take the pledge to not text and drive – which is critical to saving lives. More drivers on the road More miles driven More distracted driving It’s more affordable than ever to drive. There was a 12 year low for the average price of a gallon of gas at $1.94 a gallon in 2016, according to Federal Highway Administration (April 2016). Unemployment is the lowest since 2008, according to Federal Highway Administration. This means more people are on the road commuting to and from work. This means there are more cars on the road. There were 17.5 million cars sold in 2015, beating sales peak in 2000, according to the Wall Street Journal (Jan 2016). A record 3.148 trillion miles were driven in 2015, according to U.S Department of Transportation. There was a 5.6% increase in road travel between February 2015 and February 2016, according to Federal Highway Administration (Feb 2016) This also means there are more distracted drivers on the road. Nine Americans die every day from distracted driving accidents, according to the CDC. 25% of accidents involve phones, according to the National Safety Council According to the Washington Post, 49% of drivers text and drive. That’s about half of the drivers around you on the road. During a typical daylight moment in the US in 2015, an estimated 542,000 drivers were using hand-held cell phones behind the wheel. The percentage of people visibly using hand-held devices while driving jumped 267% between 2009 and 2015. Are you seeing people driving around using their phones while driving? Unfortunately, there are more car crashes now than ever. According to the National Safety Council, 2015 traffic deaths rose by the largest percent in 50 years, likely tied to these factors.

Texting while driving is as dangerous as driving legally drunk. Texting takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of a football field completely blind. Texting while driving is as dangerous as driving legally drunk. And that’s why we are here today to take the pledge to not text and drive. Though we will be talking about phone use today, it’s important to point out that it’s not the only form of distracted driving. There’s also eating while driving, putting on makeup, etc. Text messaging takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds. When you’re texting and driving, you’re 23 times more likely to get in a crash.

Because of the distracted driving epidemic, we’re seeing new kinds of crashes that weren’t prevalent in the past. For example, a 70 mph rear-end collision with no skid marks, meaning the driver never even realized they were about to collide because they weren’t looking at the road. At 70 mph, the crash could be very severe – even deadly.

What does it mean to be an active driver What does it mean to be an active driver? It means to drive with purpose. Active drivers should be alert and in control. The phone should be put away or off. You should be scanning the road and not distracted by passengers. Active drivers adjust for the driving environment – weather, construction, time of day. Start a discussion about ideas for being a more active driver. What are ways drivers can stay more active? What gets you in the zone or makes you focus? What would motivate you to drive differently?
