Welcome to Mr. Novak’s Chemistry ClassES! Periods #1, 2, 3, 6, 7, & #8

Mr. Novak’s Grading PoLicY (for all Chemistry classes): 50% Major Chapter Tests and ONE (1) student notebook check per marking period (for Regular Chemistry classes only – NOT HONORS). 30% Laboratory Reports/Projects. 20% Quizzes/Do Now’s/Classwork-Study Guides/Student Required Classwork-Study Guides. 0% Homework – please see Mr. Novak’s AND DBHS’s Student and Faculty Handbook.

Honor’s Chemistry Textbook: McGraw Hill: Chemistry by Authors Chang & Chang. This course follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that require students to discover and monitor their own level of understanding, return to the available resources, re-discover and develop new solutions, and to further improve their level of the required degree of understanding. Students have all been signed on to this Honors Chemistry class on Monday – 09/11/2017.

Honor’s Chemistry Students have ALL assignments including: reading assignments, Learn-Smart, Quizzes, and Tests presented, delivered, and completed online ONLY! Student progress on these online assignments will be routinely assessed by me and then will be posted to Genesis on a completion basis. Students can and should re-assess their understanding by re-taking on-line Quizzes. Students are given and encouraged to initiate multiple attempts on ALL of their online discoveries and assessments. Students are permitted (and encouraged to do so) 2 or more attempts on all online Quizzes.

HONOR’S CHEMISTRY: The “Online Tests” are designed to be a direct reflection of previously assessed online “Learn- Smart” and “Quiz” content. Mr. Marinzulich (a retired chemist) and myself (via E-mail) will be there to answer any students’ concerns and questions. Students SHOULD NOT wait until the last minute to ask questions! Due dates for this class are posted WEEKS in advance. You and your student can contact me at anytime at: david_novak@kenilworthschools.com The NEXT SLIDE is what your Honors Chemistry student will address every day in class. If the Honors Chemistry student does not use their permitted classroom time to complete assignments, then they will have online homework/assessment assignments to complete. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! All Honors assignments can and should be completed in class in the IMC with teacher assistance. A “SAMPLE” of your Honors Chemistry student’s course page is to follow.

Regular Chemistry TEXTBOOK:  All students have been assigned a Hard copy of the Modern Chemistry textbook (all are required to cover this textbook).  All students have also been assigned an online textbook with individual user name/id/password.  Mr. Novak has also posted all of the student required homework assignments online. These homework assignments are required to further develop student understanding thru at home practice. Homework assignments are also assigned to invoke your student’s questions and to further develop their understanding.

CHEMISTRY  Daily, your student is being instructed to complete a very important Chapter Study Guide that will only prepare them for each chapter’s formal (Major) assessment.  Students are permitted to use this completed classwork Chapter Study Guide on the Chapter Test.  1st Chapter TEST is: CHAPTER #1 TEST on FRIDAY – 09/15/2017 (students can use completed in-class “Guide”.  A Daily CLASSWORK EXPECTATIONS/STUDENT CLASSWORK GUIDE can be found on my DBHS Web page and has also been posted on the Smart-Board in class daily: --> Mr. Novak's 2017-2018 Regular Chemistry CLASSWORK EXPECTATIONS/STUDENT CLASSWORK GUIDE (Periods #1, 3, 7, & #8).  Mr. Novak’s Chemistry Homework is to bring questions to class. It is also required for this class. Home work is also posted on-line http://brearleyhigh.kenilworthschools.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=8069&pageId=1410463
