Virtual Network Management

Virtual Network A virtual network is a computer network that consists, at least in part, of virtual network links. A virtual network link is a link that does not consist of a physical (wired or wireless) connection between two computing devices but is implemented using methods of network virtualization.

Virtual network a virtual network representing the actual network can be viewed as overlaying the actual network.

Components of Virtual Network Management There are four components in virtual network management : Virtual Network Interface Controller(VNIC) Virtual switch Etherstub Zone

Virtual Network Interface Card(VNIC) It is a virtual network device that behaves like a network interface card when configured. The virtual NIC that is represented by an Ethernet Port can be managed using Ethernet Port Profile and Ethernet Port Resource Virtualization Profile. A VNIC has an automatically generated MAC address.

Virtual Switch It is an entity that facilitates communication between virtual machines.  It loops traffic between virtual machines within the physical machine and does not send this traffic out on the wire. A virtual switch is implicitly created whenever you create a VNIC on top of an underlying datalink.

Etherstub  It is a pseudo Ethernet NIC that is configured at the datalink layer. We can create VNICs over an etherstub instead of over a physical NIC. We can construct a private virtual network that is isolated both from the other virtual networks on the system and from the external network.

Zone It is a virtualized operating system environment created within a single instance of the operating system. Zones provide an isolated and protected environment for running applications. By assigning VNICs or etherstubs, we can create a network within a single system.

Active networking Active networking provides a programmable infrastructure using a well-defined structure for packets that contain general-purpose program code and a uniform standardized execution platform at the nodes of the network.
