Real Scientist Use Notebooks Scientists keep notebooks!  Scientist's notebooks include what worked and what did not work in their investigations.  They sometimes learn much more from what did not work!  Scientist notebooks include data, drawings, charts, reflections, and new questions!  Scientists never cross out or erase what they record when new discoveries take place - they just add new entries, ideas, thoughts or reflections! 3

Left Side-Right Side: WHICH SIDE? The notebook is divided into TWO sections. Left Side-Right Side: WHICH SIDE? The Left SIDE is for student work. This is the side that you can use to show your creativity. This is the “output” or product side. It expands on what you learned. The Right SIDE is contains only information given by the teacher. Nothing else should be placed on the RIGHT SIDE!! This is the side for teaching and learning. 5

RIGHT side is “restricted” to TEACHER INPUT LEFT side = STUDENT work = OUTPUT 6

LEFT SIDE Your response to the day’s activity is placed on the bottom left or output side of the notebook. This section acts as a reinforcement for the right or input side. You can design the left side any way you like unless specific guidelines are given. 7
