Air Masses and Fronts

Air Mass Large area of similar temperature (arctic to hot) and humidity (dry to humid).

Air Mass First letter is lower case and represents humidity ( continental or maritime)

Maritime (m) Maritime (m) Moist (high humidity) air

Continental (c) Dry (low humidity) air

Air Mass Second letter is upper case and symbolizes temperature.

Tropical (T) Warm air

Polar (P) Cold air

Arctic (A) Very cold (frigid/bitter) air.

mT Types of Air Masses Humid/warm air usually over tropical waters Maritime Tropical Humid/warm air usually over tropical waters Bring mild, humid weather in winter. In summer, it brings hot, humid spells in July and August.

mP Humid/cold air coming from over cold ocean waters Maritime Polar Brings cold, humid weather

cT Dry/hot air originating over desert areas Continental Tropical Brings very hot, dry weather.

cP Dry/cold air coming from high latitudes Continental Polar In winter, it brings very cold weather. In spring and summer, cool, dry days.

cA Extremely dry/frigid air coming from high latitudes Continental Arctic Extremely dry/frigid air coming from high latitudes Bitter cold in the winter. Rarely present in summer.
