What is the Peer Consultation Program? A safe, supportive, and confidential program designed to provide instructors with formative feedback and advice on their teaching Promotes reflective practice Learning-centred approach for active and reflective practitioners who want to improve their teaching and their students’ learning

Main Goals To support and enhance the teaching skills and confidence of faculty and sessional instructors through critical learning conversations focused on learners and their learning. To foster collaboration between peers sharing similar interests and experiences about teaching and learning (multidisciplinary collaboration). To provide a safe environment enabling people to engage in an active process of reflection on and experimentation in their teaching practices. To engage broad and varied teaching community members across campus.

What it is not… A formal, summative evaluation of teaching Meant to be used at annual review (Faculty Evaluation Committee [FEC])

Who are the Peer Consultants? Volunteers, who are all teachers at the University of Alberta Range of teaching experiences and backgrounds Many have been recognized for their excellence in teaching Trained in the Peer Consultation process

What is involved? Possible collaborative activities: Guided observation of a peer consultant’s class with a debriefing session Classroom observation(s) by a peer consultant Video recording of a teaching session and self-/peer-assessment Development of a questionnaire to solicit student feedback Focus group discussion with students lead by the peer consultant A confidential report summarizing the process

Learner centred & instructor controlled confidential conversational Learner centred & instructor controlled flexible reflective Collaborative peer development

How can I participate? If you are interested in the Peer Consultation Program: Contact CTL: ctl@ualberta.ca Initial meeting to discuss interests, needs Paired with a trained Peer Consultant You and the Peer Consultant decide on the process you’d like to follow
