2002-05-07 Mobitex. In passenger transport systems. Rev PA1

Did you know? Mobitex in passenger transport systems. Mobitex is already widely used in public transport and has increased efficiency and profitability while improving service in many organisations. The communication network used in a public transport application must be able to handle a large amount of real-time data generated by hundreds or even thousands of vehicles operating over a large and often densely populated metropolitan area. Benefits of an AVL/RTPI system are substantial and measurable, to operators, to controllers, to passengers and to drivers.

Drivers. Automatic vehicle control. 2002-05-07 Drivers. Automatic vehicle control. An RTPI system enhances safety by allowing drivers to devote full attention to operating the vehicle. Text messages from traffic control Time in relation to schedule Support for making connections Automatic control of signs, stop announcements, connection information Alarm in case of assault Alert in case of vehicle fault Rev PA1

Controllers. Informed at all times 2002-05-07 Controllers. Informed at all times Traffic controllers gain a dynamic overview of the entire route network allowing them to respond appropriately. Vehicle positions Text messaging with all vehicles Analysis of delays Automatic passenger counting, mileage metering, ticket statistics Vehicle data for maintenance Exact vehicle position for assault alarms Rev PA1

Passengers. Wireless passenger services 2002-05-07 Passengers. Wireless passenger services Passenger need simple information about their current location and alternatives routes. At stops – On Vehicle Data displayed on electronic signs, Internet or phones, on buses or trains and on platforms Real time passenger information (RTPI) on departures, arrivals and delays etc Wireless connected ticketing machines – reliable card transactions Rev PA1

Operators. Decision support. 2002-05-07 Operators. Decision support. RTPI provides the opportunity to streamline activities and maximize the effective use of operational, support staff and resources. Plan schedules more efficiently Automatic passenger counting Statistics Schedule maintenance, dispatch of work order to maintenance staff Follow-up Rev PA1

Did you know? Mobitex in passenger transport systems. Benefits of an AVL/RTPI system are substantial and measurable. Result from current implementations indicated that service can be provided with 10% fewer vehicles It is also estimated that an AVL/RTPI system has resulted in an increase in passengers of about 2 percent

Setup. 4 different business setups 2002-05-07 Setup. 4 different business setups Full ownership and operations of the network Full ownership of the network External partner operates the network The operator owns and runs the network Virtual Private Network Owning the network together with existing operator Rev PA1

Benefits. Key points with Mobitex 2002-05-07 Benefits. Key points with Mobitex Proven, robust and very reliable data communication (used by 150 different police, ambulance, fire organisations around the world) Full availability. Can guarantee less than 10 seconds response time for all data messages - under all traffic conditions. Proven under demanding conditions, disasters, terrorist attacks Support a range of functionalities that can further enhance public transport services Data instead of voice means less interaction with driver No dropped connections when vehicles move to new cell Capacity to handle handle a large amount of real-time data Tetra/Marconi live test output 1 sds/sec =130-140 bytes Availability 90-92/ Mobitex 2 packets a 512 bytes per second Rev PA1

Adaptable. Flexible private network Simple network structure with efficient network elements Very high operational stability resulting in low operational costs Scalable – add more resources when needed Extremely frequency efficient Many users per channel, up to 2500

Clever. Smart design, sophisticated functions. 2002-05-07 Clever. Smart design, sophisticated functions. Network Control Center The NCC Handles all operation and maintenance tasks Network Switches, MX Routes traffic + gateway to other networks and local hosts Base stations, BRU Services a radio cell of up to 30km in diameter A Mobitex network can be configured in man different ways, from a large public network providing nationwide coverage to a small, privately owned network serving a single company or region. Mobitex Base Stations (BRU) The basic functionality for a Mobitex network is provided by a number of radio base stations and one or more switches. Each base station, just the size of a briefcase, services a single radio cell, which typically has a diameter of 20 to 30 kilometers, depending on environmental and other conditions. Together the base stations provide and area of coverage and determine the capacity of the network. Wireless devices communicate with the nearest base station but are also able to roam freely between radio cells and from one base station to another as the user’s location changes. The system operates on the 400, 800 and 900 MHz frequency bands.   Mobitex Switches (MX) A Mobitex network normally contains many switches, which are organized in a hierarchy of local and regional switches, all of which are connected by fixed links. The local switch routes traffic to and from the base stations and provides connections between wireless devices and fixed terminals. Local switches also provide important gateways to other networks. In the standard network configuration, there is an X.25 port implemented directly in the local switch, but several other gateway options, including IP connectivity, are available. Network Control Center (NCC) The entire network is supervised and managed from the Mobitex Network Control Center (NCC). The NCC handles all operations and maintenance tasks, including network configuration, alarm handling, subscriber administration and billing information. Individual base stations and other network components can be reconfigured from the NCC, thus minimizing the need for costly and time-consuming site visits. For small, privately owned networks that do not require all of these functions, the management system may be hosted on a single computer. The NCC or management system is normally located at the company’s operations or dispatch center. Rev PA1

Did you know? Single source provider Mobitex Technology AB may be contracted as a main contractor, providing full responsibility for the implementation of a wireless data project, including installation of network, solution and support services. We work with many different solution providers and a large variety of terminal vendors We combine our Mobitex with complementary technologies such as WLAN, see next slide

Case Security & info in Paris buses. The Solution - alarm for drivers, travel information Security and information applications via Mobitex using GPS in 4000 buses. Real time info provided to passengers and operative center, on departures, arrivals, delays and accidents. Alarm button if driver is attacked. © Mobitex Technology AB 2004

Case Skånetrafiken – South of Sweden. The Solution – real time passenger information system First phase 57 buses connected to Mobitex, expected to handle some 6.5 million messages and vehicle positions per year. Next phase include real-time traffic information on website using an application called “Is my bus on time”

Case Comfort Taxi in Singapore. The Solution – booking and dispatch system 9500 taxis with computerized GPS tracking & automatic dispatching system via Mobitex Customers may order taxi through order terminal or automated call handling. Control center interact only when disturbances occurs © Mobitex Technology AB 2004
