Sadia Islam O.C 2nd hr. Multicultural Presentation Benjamin Carson Sadia Islam O.C 2nd hr. Multicultural Presentation

Early Life: Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18,1951 and raised right here in Detroit, Michigan Benjamin was the youngest out of the two siblings. Curtis Carson being his older brother His mother and father, Sonya Copeland and Robert Solomon Carson, split when Ben was just at the age of eight. Being a single mother, Sonya Copeland had to work at 2 or 3 jobs to keep her family afloat. This took toll on Benjamin and Curtis

Childhood: Benjamin didn’t take his education seriously as he fell to the bottom of his class. He became involved into the “thug life” . His temper took over him and began fighting His mother was determined to change her son around, so she limited their tv time to only a few selected programs, refused to let them outside if he didn’t finish his homework, AND made him check out two books from the library every week along with turning a written book report on both books into her.

Childhood Cont.: Carson hated reading in the beginning of this regimen, but eventually fell in love with the concept of reading He began using his imagination in reading and found it more enjoyable than watching television. This attraction led him to read every book he could get his hands on, learning as much as he was truly capable of He instantly went from the bottom of the class to the top in about a half of a year

Education: Carson graduated Southwestern High School with honors and attended Yale University with a full ride scholarship He majored in psychology in 1973 and graduated with a B.A degree Benjamin then enrolled into University of Michigan’s medical school where he found interest and also talented in neurosurgery and decided to pursue it

Family: In 1975 Ben married Lacena Rustin who he met at Yale After earning his medical degree the couple moved to Baltimore, Maryland The couple had 3 sons: Rhoeyce Carson, Benjamin Carson Jr., Murray Carson; oldest to youngest respectively

Career: After graduating Medical School he became a resident in the famous John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in 1977 His amazing eye-hand coordination and 3D visualizing skills made him an extraordinary surgeon. He became chief resident in neurosurgery at Hopkins by 1982 He was handed an important opportunity from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia. Australia lacked skilled neurosurgeons, so Carson took the invitation. He gained a tremendous amount of experience while residing there

Conjoined Twins: Carson returned to Hopkins in 1984, and in one year he became director of Pediatric Neurosurgery there at the age of 33. The youngest U.S physician to hold such a position Much of the media was focused on Carson when he traveled to Germany to try and separate conjoined twins at the back of the head On September 4, 1987, after months of training, Carson and a huge team of doctors and nurses prepared for a radical 22 hour surgery. Both twins survived the operation with a bit of brain damage. Carson is known as the first surgeon who separated twins joined at the head successfully.

Currently: Carson retired from surgery officially July 1, 2013 after 30 years in medicine Carson ran in the presidential race of 2016, but then dropped out seeing he did not want this path Benjamin is now working as the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Reflection Ben Carson left a HUGE imprint on the face of the earth. He revolutionized the medical technologies and made amazing breakthroughs on what can actually be done. He personally shows that someone from OUR city CAN become something extraordinary. He inspires many people with his faith in god and many many people look up to him as a hero. He received a legion of honorary doctorate degrees and accolades. He is well respected and definitely inspires me if not anyone else.
