How to Restate the Question Turn the Question Around Write a Complete Answer by Turning the Question Around!

Read the question! What is your favorite sport? Step 1 Read the question! What is your favorite sport?

Remove the question words Step 2 Remove the question words (the six Ws and how) Who, what, when, where, why, which, and how! Who was there? What happened? When did it happen? Where did it take place? Why did it happen? Which way is it? How did it happen? What is your favorite sport?

Step 3 Answer the question by turning it around! (Put it in an order that makes sense) What is your favorite sport? My favorite sport is baseball.

ELA examples: Q: Why did the boy climb the tree? A: The boy climbed the tree because… Q: Who was the main character? A: The main character was … Q: Where did the story take place? A: The story took place …

Math examples: Q: How many candies are left over? A: ___ candies are left over. Q: How much money do 6 bananas cost? A: 6 bananas cost… Q: How many crayons are there in total? A: There are ___ crayons in total.

Tips: Every sentence begins with a capital letter Every sentence ends with a period If the questions asks “Why”?, use “because” in your answer Never start a sentence with “because” Pronouns (he, she) can be changed to proper nouns (Michael, Maria) Capitalize proper nouns If the question is part of a story, do not include words from the whole story, only words from the question!
