What is TCEC? T: Topic Sentence- Where you make your claim C: Context- Where you give background information or the description of where you obtained your evidence E: Evidence- Where you find textual evidence. An example from the text that provides proof to support your claim C: Commentary- In your own words, explain the evidence and how it supports your claim. What point are you trying to make?

Before Writing… BRAINSTORM!!! Use graphic organizers to help you write down and organize your thoughts For example: Outlines Mind Maps Lists Cause and Effect Charts Etc.

For Example Example prompt: In what ways did Justinian I and his written legal code positively affect the United States? Provide examples and detailing sentences to support your claims.

Justinian I and his written legal code positively affected the United States by helping to create a government based on unified laws to protect its citizens. Emperor Justinian I, who was a Byzantine Emperor in the 500’s AD, gave the orders to sort through outdated laws, translate laws into contemporary language, and compile them into a written code called The Code of Justinian. According to the article, “Historymakers: Justinian I Byzantine Emperor”, Emperor Justinian wanted to create this book of laws, “so that in times of peace and war alike the state may be governed… by every legal means [to] cast out the wickedness of the perverters of justice”. This illustrates the idea that governments should be run following a unified set of laws to make sure justice is carried out fairly no matter what. The idea of having a unified set of laws is seen in the US by having a written Constitution, state laws, and federal laws. Creating a set of written laws helps to protect citizens because they know their rights, and the government cannot simply create or get rid of laws whenever they want to. Government must follow the same laws as everyone else.

TCEC Practice Prompt: How have the ideas of government from Ancient Greece and Rome positively affect the United States? Provide examples and evidence to support your claim. CREATE A TCEC ORGANIZER FIRST!

FOR homework tonight: CREATE and COMPLETE a TCEC Graphic Organizer For the “Evidence” section of the organizer, use the textbook or an outside source If an outside source is used, you MUST provide the source I will grade on structure this time
