Sit side-by-side with your partner Place all evidence on your desk: The Medieval Life and Times on Marco Polo (Webquest) The Video notes on Marco Polo by DolbeareWaltonMC Mr. Roughton Law and Order History Investigation

Did Marco Polo go to China or not? With your partner, discuss agree on an answer to the question. This is your CLAIM. Raise your hand when you have agreed on your claim. Write your CLAIM sentence on a separate sheet of paper. Write 2 pieces of evidence from the documents to support your claim.

How to write a good evidence “sandwich” (figurative language) Find one quote from the Webquest to support your CLAIM. 2. Find one quote from The Marco Polo video that YOU think is good evidence to support your CLAIM. 3. Find one quote from The Law and Order History Investigation that supports your CLAIM.

Writing Basic Evidence/Quote Sandwiches RULE: You may not cite evidence or quotes in your paper unless it is in a “sandwich”. Top part + Middle part + Bottom part

Example to support a CLAIM that Marco Polo did go to China. The Medieval Life and Times website states, “Important positions at the Chinese court were given to Marco Polo's father and uncle, and so they and Marco Polo lived in the country for some years. Marco Polo studied the Chinese language, and it was not very long before he could speak it.” Basically, this states that the Polo’s did spend time in China and implies that Polo and his father were given duties allowing them to make decisions in the empire. This evidence matters to the claim because the quote directly states that the Polo’s spent time in China.

Example to support a CLAIM that Marco Polo did not go to China. According to The Law and Order Investigation Exhibit G Rusticello da Pisa wrote most fiction stories including “The Romance of King Arthur and the Magician’s Daughter.” In other words, the only person who recorded Polo’s travels was written by someone who made things up for a living. This evidence matters to the claim because it is difficult to believe that everything in the Book The Travels of Marco Polo are factual, questioning the validity of the stories.

Did Marco Polo go to China? Look at the evidence and make a claim: Yes, Marco Polo did go to China. -OR- No, Marco Polo did not go to China.

Pick out 2 pieces of evidence from the documents and write one sandwich for each one Introduce the evidence (the top part of the sandwich) The evidence (the middle part) The bottom part of the sandwich What the evidence is saying in your own words Why the evidence matters to your claim
