A SUPERMARKET CHAIN BENEFITS FROM A COMBINED ENERGY STORAGE & UPS SOLUTION Client: Supermarket Chain Application: Voltage regulation Supply resilience Peak shaving Grid contracts Location: Cornwall, UK Technology: 250kW BESS & UPS Energy reduction: 31% Project Date: 2015 CHALLENGE The client is a major supermarket chain with multiple stores and distribution centres across the UK. The company actively and continuously explores ways that it can improve its sustainability from farm to shelf, and actively looks at new technologies available which can help contribute towards its goals. Electricity costs account for a sizeable portion of supermarkets costs due to their need to operate strictly temperature controlled areas even when the stores are closed as well as catering for customer satisfaction through air conditioning and lighting, for extended, and even 24/7 operating hours. SOLUTION After a full and thorough site survey and analysis of the site requirements, Powerstar recommended the installation of a 286kWh VIRTUE Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) combined with voltage regulation and UPS capabilities. The full UPS capabilities of Powerstar’s VIRTUE solution provides a site wide backup and keeps the supermarkets operations running seamlessly at all times, even in the case of a grid power loss. The installation is based at one of it’s stores in Cornwall in the South West of the UK. RESULTS Following installation in 2015, the store is benefitting from a 31% reduction in energy costs. The unit is providing the site with an optimised voltage output, ability to access additional revenues through grid contracts and supply resilience with peace of mind through its UPS capabilities. www.powerstar.com/virtue
