Personalized or Customized? Creating a Digital Learning Experience for Students Presented by: David French and Hope Huynh

Our Students require a 21st Century Classroom

Digital Natives Digital Immigrants

STUDENTS LIVE IN A DIGITAL WORLD BUT WE FORCE THEM TO LEARN THROUGH ANALOG MEANS. NO WONDER KEEPING THEM INTERESTED IS SO TOUGH. Technology taps into student’s talents like no other form or method of instruction. This creates an environment where students WANT to come to school. Dave Burgess asks the difficult question- “if students didn’t have to be there, would you be teaching to an empty room? The use of technology provides students with the tools they need to design and create.

Customized or Personalized?

How we got here How Gaming affected today’s learner

Leveraging Digital Tools to Transform Learning The Power of Blended Learning Focus on Learning Targets

video games have changed society video games have changed society. For twenty years screens (TVs and Film in particular) were passive relationships. Then, suddenly you could control what's on the screen from a little box!? Using new tools allow students to use gaming skills- they relate to that. When they see themselves in this experience in the classroom, learning becomes relevant.

What is missing? Let’s Talk About Engagement… Most of the time, frustration is because of a lack of interest and engagement. The one thing we all know that we need in each lesson is student engagement. Along with sound instructional practices, engagement will drive student achievement. We can all pretty much agree that if we have those two things, students will learn.

You Can Do It! Live outside your comfort zone Culture- Shaping the culture of your school or classroom Personalized PD for teachers- the Connected Educ

Digital Tools- the Teacher’s New Toolb Digital Learning Tools to Customize learning for students

Though technology should be the wheels that drive the car,- it will never replace the teacher. Bill Gates coined the phrase “Technology is just a tool, it is still the teacher that makes the difference.” Though our teachers do need new tools to use, it is still the teacher that makes the difference. Those teachers that understand the value in these tools will be more successful with today’s student.

Customized Math Instruction with Tenmarks

Learning Outcomes-Students Students will take ownership of their academic growth by being active partners in their unique learning pathway by having voice and choice.   Students will gain a global perspective by leveraging digital tools. Students will collaborate using digital tools to support their learning and the learning of others. Students will demonstrate academic mastery and growth through creation and publication of digital work. Students will become responsible and ethical digital citizens.

Learning Outcomes- Teachers Teachers will use digital technology to appropriately connect students to authentic learning experiences (outside the walls of the classroom).   Teachers will empower students to choose their learning path through relevant and purposeful use of digital technology. Teachers will personalize learning through real time data collection and analysis and individualized learning experiences. Teachers will use digital technology to collaborate, globally and locally, to foster professional growth.
