E CO - EFFICIENCY GAINS FROM REMANUFACTURING A case study of photocopier remanufacturing at Fuji Xerox Australia Riona Burke

R EMANUFACTURING V S R EUSE Remanufacturing – to repair and refurbish a product or product components to an As-new condition. Reuse is using the product for the same reason that it was produced for. It does not include the refurbishment of components.

Fig. 1 Fuji Xerox closed loop system diagram

FINDINGS Remanufacturing contribute towards increasing the eco-efficiency of a product system Does not always provide environmental or economic benefits for the industry. The process is limited by a number of factors The condition in which photocopiers are returned The distance they have to travel The original product design The volume and frequency The value of the remanufactured products and the demand for them

FINDINGS At the moment it is only financially worthwhile to remanufacture costly high volume products such as the Xerox Photocopier. When photocopiers are collected, they are sorted into categories for repossessing, refurbishment, asset recovery and remanufacture.

FINDINGS There is a rapid rate of technological change within the electrical industry. Resource and energy savings at Xerox do not support hopes that the current manufacturing systems will not create a sustainable closed loop system Makes remanufacturing more challenging and more expensive to complete. Upgrading is crucial for the viability of remanufacturing to ensure that is does not simply prolong the life span of an in-efficient product

P RODUCT DESIGN FACILITATES REMANUFACTURE Eco-Design directive 2009 – looks at improving the energy efficiency of a product. Correct design of photocopiers that facilitate disassembly More energy saved in remanufacturing = More savings.
