Modern Political History

Territory of Hawaii Started in 1900 after Annexation. Territory Jurisdiction of the United States. Has the same right as a US Citizen. It is part of the US. President Appoints Governor

Democratic party of Hawaii After WWII the Democratic party gain a lot of support. They help the people to improve their lives Better housing Minimal pay Free schooling

John Burns During WWII was Captain of HPD He stated that the Japanese-Americans were not a threat. After the War he started to help the Vets of 442nd Infantry. He was first Dem governor of Hawaii First Universal Health care.

Statehood Statehood will make Hawaii have a say in US politics In Territory- can not vote in congress A Petition was singed to become state Over 116,000 signatures were obtained Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959

Hawaiian Sovereignty Sovereignty - One which governs itself independently of any foreign power. Hawaiians say Hawaii is not a state In Annexation, there must be a treaty between two nation. (In Hawaii’s case there is not.) 1993 Bill Clinton signed Apology Resolution- apologizing the overthrow. Akaka Bill- is trying to make the Hawaiians similar status as Native Americans.

Setting up the new Government Using all of Modern Hawaiian History, make New Hawaiian Government. -- Using the 7 sections in the Survey make a poster Poster With 7 panels You have $10 Million, budget your government programs Must explain your plan logically using all the info that we have learned in the past (Paragraph for each section). Must chose one problem that affects Hawaii and find a solution. (Economy, Traffic, overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Resources etc.) It has to be fair to everyone involved.

Planning 50th Statehood day You are in a group must plan for the 50th Statehood day celebration. Using MHH to plan the day out. Must include the flowing: Must be culturally sensitive as well. On a poster History of Statehood (1) Example: timeline Speeches (1) Talk about Statehood 3 paragraphs long Cultural Presentation (1) Dance, music etc. Itinerary (and supplies) form 8am to 6 pm Be specific
