English 8: The Open Road Mr. Cabat September 22, 2014 Pope Marcellus Mass – Kyrie Giovanni da Palestrina 1562 English 8: The Open Road Mr. Cabat September 22, 2014 Aim: “Darmok and Jalad on the ocean:” Deepening Our Stories through the Power of Elaboration

Just an Allusion! Darmok and Jalad on the Ocean. Sorry to nerd out on you there, but in this clip, what Capt. Picard finally understands is that the Tamarians communicate exclusively in metaphor, or example. So what would our “Darmok” phrases be for the following? I’m in love. It was a total success. It was a disaster. It’s going to rain today.

So How Does This Apply? “For me, the closing of the deli was the Titanic hitting the iceberg. It wasn’t the end at that moment, but it meant the end was inevitable.”

Transitions Here are some really good transitional phrases to use as you try to elaborate your pieces and further engage your readers: --At first it seemed…but later… --Picture this. --No one knows for sure… --Some seemed to think…but others… --We can only imagine…

Let’s Go to the Rubric So, what exactly are we looking for in terms of elaboration? Let’s look at the rubric that we will be using for this unit, and find out.

Draft Away! Continue and/or complete your final draft for the newscast.

Homework Keep working on those drafts. And please remind your parents to stop by tonight for Back to School Night! CABAT ENGLISH 8
