Aesthetics defined Aesthetics can be defined as a branch of philosophy dealing with how things are viewed such as beautiful, ugly, comedic, serious, etc. as applied to fine arts.

More Defined Aesthetics seeks to teach us that beauty and ugliness are not static things, but change over time and across cultures. What you find beautiful today will not be beautiful to others in Africa now or here in twenty years.

Beauty Beauty can be defined as a quality that gives deep pleasure or satisfaction to the mind. Beauty can be portrayed in many ways and has been interpreted into many forms in many different cultures. What do you find beautiful? Open to a blank page in your sketchbook and list at least five things you think are beautiful.

Beauty across the world

Beauty Through History Over time art has continuously rebelled against itself. The Rococo period was a rebellion against the serious drama of the Baroque, and Neoclassicism rebelled against the playfulness of Rococo.

Modern Art Is the artwork being made today still considered beautiful? Think back to contemporary artists we have studied. List three who’s work you enjoy looking at. List three who’s work you don;’t.

What is Art? The question of beauty and ugliness brings us to a new question. What exactly is art? Come up with a definition for what you believe art to be in you sketchbook.

Assignment For your assignment please create a painting whose subject is things that you find beautiful, but depict them in a way that you find unpleasant to look at. You can also do it in reverse, pick things you find repulsive and depict them in a beautiful way. Five ideas in you sketchbook will be due next class.
