Addiction as a Family Issue: Help the Family See They are Affected by a Family Member's Addiction Explore Why They May Feel Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Supporting Loved Ones in All Stages of Recovery: Help the Family Understand the Appeal of Opiates Instill Hope, Acknowledge Fears Help Families Learn Not To Enable Their Addicted Loved One

Rules to follow Don’t give in to manipulation. You’ll feel bad at first, but empowered later on. Alcohol is a gateway drug. People do things drinking they might not do sober. Don't discount drinking - "At least it's not heroin." Don’t fear conflict. Try not to feel guilty if you are getting better but your loved one isn’t. Move forward no matter what past mistakes you may have made. Don’t be blackmailed. Don’t cover for your loved one’s addiction. Don’t pay bills, don’t post bail. Don’t cancel your plans because of your loved one’s addiction

Painful though it may be, professionals need to help some families look inward… Do you allow yourself to enjoy life? (“You can only be as happy as your least happy child.” It’s a saying, not a law.) Do you do take good care of yourself, physically, emotionally, and spiritually? Do you pursue your interests, and develop your talents? Do you accept your limitations? Do you enjoy the feeling of being ‘needed’ by your loved one? Do you play martyr with friends and family? Does your loved one’s addiction distract you from other problems? Would you have less control if your loved one was more responsible?
