Introduction to Transportation Technology Tech Ed S-O High School

Transportation Tech One of the most important systems in our society Definition: “Any technology that is used to transport people and/or products with in our society Can be divided up into four groups called Environmental Divisions

Transportation Tech

Terrestrial Transportation that is used on or under land Fixed routes is transportation that is fixed to a path, such as a elevator, while random route modes are not, like a bicycle.

Marine Any transportation via water Bulk of this in the U.S. happens in… Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway Mississippi River Pacific,Gulf, & Atlantic Coast Waterways

Atmospheric Primary operation is in the earths atmosphere Airships are also called blimps, dirigibles, or zeppelins

Space Reaches beyond the atmosphere surrounding earth

Technological Systems 6 Technological systems with in each mode of transportation Each mode needs these systems in order to function

Propulsion Makes things go Gas or Diesel Engine Electric Motors Choice is dictated by requirements such as function, speed, distance, etc…

Suspension Supports Vehicle Weight Mechanical, Fluid, & Magnetic Ex: Tires, shocks, buoyancy, wings, etc…

Guidance Allows for safe and correct operation Trains = Rails Devices: GPS Systems Tachometer Radar Airspeed Sensors

Control Both traffic and the vehicle itself Traffic: Vehicle: Stop Lights Air Traffic Controllers Vehicle: Brakes Cruise Control

Support Systems of technology that “support” Making/Processing the vehicle Moving/Managing Passengers Moving goods to and from the vehicle

Structure Engineering Designs Materials Lighter, Stronger, Resilience
